Who
Are We?
The Okinawan Karate Dojo of Merritt Island,
Florida is a Shorin-Ryu Karate school serving all of Central
Brevard County, including Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral,
Cocoa, Rockledge, Indiatlantic, Sharpes, Port St. John, and Titusville.
The dojo features an indoor dojo, and outdoor
training deck, and a Karate Museum on the premises.
What
is Shorin-Ryu Karate USA?
This traditional style was founded by Ansei Ueshiro, the Okinawan
famous for bringing Shorin-Ryu Karate to the USA in 1962, hence
the title "Shorin-Ryu Karate USA, Under the Direction of Grand
Master Ansei Ueshiro." Karate, meaning "empty hand,"
originated in Okinawa, a chain of islands between Japan and China,
several hundred years ago. "Do" means "the way of."
In Karate-Do, a student can train his whole life.
Aside
from keeping the art alive, what is the mission of the Okiawan Karate
Dojo?
Aside from keeping the art of Shorin-Ryu Karate alive, the mission
of the Okinawan Karate Dojo is to expose as many people as possible
to the art that literally transforms lives. Sensei
Judy and her husband, Sensei Barnhart,
make an outstanding team. They have been married since 1998, and
have learned to work as a powerfully effective unit, with each bringing
their own brand of instruction. They both agree that, "Once
you get the basics, the rest is simple: Breathe in strength and
energy, breathe out tiredness and weakness and the key is repetition
with focus on detail."
We

style karate, Studying and practicing Kata (basic movements), and
